Big Garden Bird Watch 2013

Very sadly this did not happen, thus breaking a seven year run of submitting results to the RSPB.

Despite loading up the balcony of delight with sunflower seeds and fat balls a week before the BGBW weekend, my feathered friends either did not find them, or thought them too scary to use. The felling last winter of the tree of delight, an apple tree below my balcony has clearly had a disastrous effect on their confidence. It used to provide a perfect landing place, which they, before flitting onto the feeder and grabbing a seed, could return to in order to feast amongst the safe branches. Without the apple tree, it’s too far to fly safely from the nearest tree.

I traditionally count on the Sunday and on that day, it was sleeting, grey, cold, blustery and windy. Any wise, judicious little bird was inclined to attempt a hazardous flight to an unknown food source.

Maybe next year….
