Sparrowhawk up close and personal

I saw a Sparrowhawk this morning on the way to the bus stop.

I could hardly NOT see it, as it flew at eye level, no more than a foot in front of my face. Once passed me, it skimmed over a hedge and disappeared. That’s the second time I’ve seen one on Rosebank Road.

I enjoyed the irony of the potential headlines “RSPB member killed by Sparrowhawk” which could have happened, should it have hit me in the face.

  • I would’ve enjoyed the embarrassment of
    “Sparrowhawk killed by RSPB member”
if it had hit your face.

  • More abuse from Amsterdam.

It would have been scary and embarrassing to have killed a sparrowhawk with my face, but I tell you it’s beak is a lot sharper than my face.

  • For fucks sake! I am not a member of the Borg collective, nor am I the fecking bionic man, so I don’t have a goddamn video camera implanted in my cranium.

Next time a bird of prey flies at me, I’ll do my best to whip out my digital camera, although I’m not promising anything spectacular.

It appears a Sparrowhawk took our Dove last week whilst she was feeding outside our kitchen window. Very sad!

Just had a sparrowhawk try to take a pigeon in my garden! I wonder if that is where my Koi are going?

I have a bird feeder in the garden with a cage around it so that only small birds can feed (keeping out larger birds and squirrels)

Yesterday I saw what appeared to be a pigeon struggling around the outside of it, then realised it was attacking a small bird feeding within. The both of them finished off down on the lawn with the larger bird sitting over its dead prey. I then noticed the brown speckeled markings of the larger bird which I beleive to have been a sparrowhawk.

Evenually after a period of rest, it flew off carrying its prey in its tallons. Amazing, but sad for the smaller creature which was probably blue tit.

just seen a sparrow hawk for the second time in a month in our garden off the wandsworth bridge road, london sw6. We have bird feeders but they are a bit awkward for it to manage. it seemed more interested in ground food. mice perhaps. it never sat staring at the bushes and it hung around for some 10mins or so. it did not seem alarmed by me taking photo inside the window some 10 feet away!!
rather worried now about our Robin! today is 2nd Jan 2013

Just seen a sparrow hawk sitting on my back garden fence in Hemsby, Norfolk.
It was chattering (sounds similar to a magpie, but not as gutteral) then swooping down under the holly bushes, then back up to the fence again.
Never seen one in the garden before, only hovering in the air.

We’ve had a male & female in the garden over the past few days in NW Leics. They seem to be getting bolder dive bombing the feeders & perching on an old apple tree close to the back windows, they have only managed one witnessed kill in our garden (from a group of chaffinches & blue tits) – unfortunately they’re not taking out the pigeons…yet! Collared doves from 5 doors down haven’t fared well. Fingers crossed they don’t take out our first ever blackcap!!
