Change the mood

One of the things I like about Word Press over Moveable Type is the ease with which you can change the theme of your blog’s pages. Find a theme you like, download it, extract it and then upload it to the correct folder on your web server. Go to the control panel and make it active – it’s live.

If you want, you can even edit the meticulously crafted php code the talented designer has spent many hours writing so you can amend their stylish and functional designs, precisely to your tastes. Most of the themes are offered freely and there are so many available, one is almost spoilt for choice.

I launched WordPress with “Talian,” which I like for its three columns, colour scheme and professional appearance, even if it is a little busy. A simpler theme, I considered was “Brown Rush.” Unfortunately I was put off by some odd coding in the main template’s text handling which removed all the line spacing between my paragraphs. The text had no space around it which made it difficult to read.

While I have another couple of themes downloaded and ready to trial, I thought I would give this one a spin, which I found while reading about the ForeSight Linux distribution.

iTheme” was inspired by Mac OS X. I like its cleanness, clarity and neatness. The only drawback so far, is that at the bottom of the page, where the background image has faded to its base colour, there is too much turquoise, which is just about my least favourite colour. Mix it with a dash of ginger and then you would definitely have it.

In honour of the immanent arrival of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, I’ll leave this one up for a while. Let me know if you like it.

PS. Try dragging and dropping some of the sidebars around.
